The end of an era, perhaps

ERA (n.) -- a long and distinct period of history with a particular feature or characteristic.

That’s how Webster’s Dictionary describes an era.

Well, I guess it’s safe to say that today marks the end of an era (at least for now). The Hudson Reporter Newspapers chain, an organization for which I’ve proudly written sports for 29 years and had a stint of 14 years where I wrote straight news as well, informed me that my services were no longer required.

Because of the coronavirus outbreak that has devastated the nation, the powers-that-be at the Reporter have decided to “suspend” my association with the paper. I was told through e-mails that there is no need to write about sports, because there are no high school or college sports – or pro sports, for that matter – to write about.

So after 29 years with the Reporter and covering Hudson County sports for 36 years, I have unceremoniously been given my release.

But in my mind, I think there’s always a need for sports. It serves as a major distraction from the rest of the horrifically sad news that we’ve all been handling recently. Sports always provide the happiness that comes with a winning touchdown, a long 3-pointer, a home run. Even without actual games ongoing right now, there are still sports stories to be written about, achievements to be recognized, features to enjoy.

So I might have had my avenue of conveying those stories to the great people of Hudson County and beyond eliminated (for now), but it’s not going to stop me from writing.

For now, you can find my work on my blog, which will feature the same things like they did in print. So there will be an Athlete of the Week this week, my own selections for All-Hudson County basketball and a regular column that will focus on Hudson County sports as well as the occasional dabble into pro sports.

Look for me here on Facebook and Twitter and click the links to read my work.

I’m very sad for it coming to an end like this, but I’m also encouraged to think that it’s not my end. I have this blog. I have my Podcast – this week’s guest will be football coaching great Ed Stinson and next week will be FDU head men’s basketball coach Greg Herenda.

And more importantly, I have my friends, so many friends that I’ve established through my sports writing, people who I never would have even known otherwise if it wasn’t for my long career. Well, I knew Herenda, but that’s another story.

If anyone has an idea for me to write about during these tumultuous times, let me know. Next week, I’m going to write previews about the baseball and softball teams in the county that I normally would have written about in the Reporter. Reach me at OGSMAR@aol.com. You can’t get rid of me that easily. Peace.

  1. How about the way teamwork teaches us skills we need to get through this difficult time? Learning to face challenges, a skill many learn in sports..how keeping our bodies strong will help us with this pandemic...soo much to write and YOU always have such a wonderful view!

  2. Sports is not only the today news ! It has so much history to it at all levels. Sure we have a void of current live sports but there is so much from the past that can be rehashed. There is so much that can be projected in sports. How terrific it would be to write a can this happen article etc.
unfortunately you are a victim of business and the negativity that accompanies it. Profit goes down who can we ax to save some bucks. No sports being played gave them an out. Stay strong and I’m sure you will be back. Good luck and let’s have a thin mans lunch soon. Be well

  3. Jim reading this makes me very sad. About as sad as the possibility of HS Baseball in NJ getting cancelled for the 2020 season. You always covered HS sports in Hudson and surrounding counties as a pro. You made som many kids feel special, feel that there hard work payed off, and shared so many great stories with so many people.
I know first hand that you did this for me as a player, coach, Dad and Son.
I and I know many many people will follow you on social media. I know I will.

  4. Funny. I thought you’ve been writing independently for the past 10 years? Who knew you were still drawing a check....or that the Hudson Whatever was still in business?? Either way you are a rock star and I am honored to call you a friend. Looking forward to the next 20 years or articles about Hudson County athletes you’ve turned into legends with your beautiful stories! God bless Big Man. And Godspeed!

  8. Jim, you have always been a great writer and great person, describing not only games and results of games, but the personalities and life stories behind achievements, overcoming adversity, and determination. Thank you for your work and I am sure some news service will have you on the sidelines in Fall as your St. Peter's Prep Marauders strive for a state and national championship.

  10. Let's not forget the tremendous work you did for the Hudson Disgrace -- I mean, the Hudson Dispatch -- under the inspiring leadership of Fatso Levine and Mike Stearns, and the more enlightened leadership of Ron Zeitlinger. I'd mention Phil Coffey, but he always seemed to be covering hockey games. Them's were the days! Very respectfully, David H. Lippman

  11. The letting go of sportswriter Jim Hague to me is totally short sighted and irresponsible. I’ve known Jim since his days at Bob Hurley’s summer basketball camps and have always found him to be a compelling character. His knowledge of sports and correspondence skills are Hall of Fame worthy with the likes of Cas Rakowski, Fred Cranwell, and the legendary Ed “Faa” Ford! Jim was always fair in his commentary on sports figures and w always painted a positive picture of the athletes he reported on. There is no doubt in my mind that Jim and his wonderful wife Mary will come out on top of this - minor setback and be back reporting what is significant in local sports in a very short time.
